Target Audience Results
The research was carried out to help us find out the best elements of an indie music video that appealed most to our target audience. We wanted to find out their opinions on all the different micro-elements of an indie music video to ensure we could include some of these things alongside our own ideas for our music video.
We had to ask 40 people to fill out our questionnaire in order to get a varied and accurate result. We also asked a variety of different ages from our target audience of 16-25 year olds to see the difference in preference from different age groups so we could try to include all elements of our target audiences opinions.
We will use these results in order to create a successful indie music video. We will do this by interpreting the most common results from our questionnaire and try to work out a way we could interpret this into our own music video as these are the things our target audience
expect to find in a successful indie music video.
Pie Charts
The first question that we asked was "What is your gender?". We asked this question to find out what gender is most likely to be watching our music video and we can therefore interpret ideas that would be more appropriate for the majority variable. In this question the results we received were 25% male and 75% female which was the type of results we expected for an indie genre music video. Therefore with these results we can interpret themes such as love and heartbreak with are more relatable for a female audience. We will take on board the fact that females are most likely going to watch our music video so we shall use more feminine features making it more appealing for females. Although 25% of the results were male we will also be including masculine effects to appeal to both genres and hopefully a wider target audience.
The second question that we asked on our questionnaire was "What is your age?". We asked this question to find out what age group is most likely to be watching our music video and what age we should be aiming the content at. The results we collected showed that 20% are 14-16, 22% are 17-20, 48% are 21-25 and 10% are 26+. From this we can see that the majority age group that will be watching our music video will be 21-25 year olds with 48%, with 17-20 year olds not that far behind with 22%. This helped us to understand that the themes and ideas we interpret into our music video should be of a more mature nature and things that would be easily understood by this age group. This will help us to make our video more conventional to the indie genre as we can use themes such as relationships and rejection which this age group could relate to as they may have experienced some of these things before and can therefore build a relationship with the artist.
The next question we asked in our questionnaire was "What themes would you expect to see in an Indie music video and why?". We asked this question to find out what types of themes our audience are most likely to expect to be in our music video as this will help to make our music video more conventional to the indie genre. We found out that 52% of our participants thought that the theme of relationships would be the main theme they would expect to be in our music video. We was glad that this was the most popular theme expected in our question because we felt as though the theme of relationships would be the most interesting theme to portray in our music video and to make it the most conventional indie music video. The second most popular theme was performance which collected 23% of the results which followed by realism with 18% of the results and then memories which collected 7%. Alongside the popular theme of relationships we also found that a performance element would make our indie music video more exciting and conventional for our audience. We will take these two popular themes on board and include them in our video to make a successful and conventional indie music video.
The next question we asked was "What type of costumes would you expect to see in an indie music video and why?". We asked this question to find out what the audience would expect the actors and the artist to wear in the music video and what style of costume they associate with the indie genre. In the results we found out that 65% of the participants found that casual clothing was the type of costume they would most expect to see in an indie music video. The next most popular option that the participants expected to see in the music video was grunge clothing. This is a conventional element of the indie genre and one of which we will take on board to make our music video more conventional and successful. The least casual options were glamorous and fancy dress clothing which received 5% for glamorous and 3% for fancy dress clothing. We expected these sets of results and will take on board that casual clothing with a hint of grunge clothing will help to make our music video more conventional to the indie genre. The next question we asked was "Out of the following, what would you expect to see in an indie music video?". This was one of our closed questions and the options available to chose from was filters, green screens and special effects. We used these as our options as these were the ideas of editing techniques that we thought would be most conventional to the indie genre and techniques we would have expected to see in a music video. The most popular result was filters which received 67% of the votes which was followed by special effects with 25% and lastly green screens which collected 8% of the votes. We expected to find that filters was the most popular result from our participants as these are commonly used in indie music videos for example a black and white filter represents a memory or past experience which makes it easier for the audience to understand the narrative and connect and build a relationship with the artist.
The next question that we asked in our questionnaire was "Do you prefer an indie music video to have a clear narrative and why?". We asked this question to see whether our target audience would prefer to watch an indie music video which had a strong storyline to follow or they would prefer to watch a music video which had stronger performance or concept elements. In our results we found that 92% of the participants said that they would prefer to watch an indie music video that had a clear narrative and only 8% said they wouldn't prefer to have a clear narrative. These were the results that we expected to collect as indie music videos are conventional to having clear narrative and storylines to follow and to help them understand the emotion that the artist is portraying. We have found from this question that we as a group will definitely be using a narrative in our music video to create a enjoyable indie music video for our target audience.

The next question we asked in our questionnaire was "Do you prefer your artist to be more relatable or more like a star and why?". We asked this question to get an idea of the type of artist we will include in our video to make them more of the style that the target audience prefer. As expected our results showed us that 85% of the audience wanted the artist to be more relatable than one that acted like a star. This is conventional to the indie genre as the artist is usually singing and writing songs about self experiences and wants to portray a certain emotion by doing this. Therefore they want the audience to be able to understand them and relate to them if they may have experienced the same thing in their life. We will take this on board when creating our own indie music video as we can create a clear narrative and build a story full of emotion that will make the artist relatable for the audience which is a convention of the genre. This will help to make our music video attract our target audience who prefer this and also make it seem professional as this is the usual method in which indie artist interpret into their material.
The next question we asked in our questionnaire "What type of instrument would you expect to see an artist playing in an indie music video and why?". We asked this question as an artist playing an instrument is a convention of the indie genre and therefore we wanted to include this element in our own music video. Therefore we wanted to get the idea of what instrument to include from our target audience. Our results showed us that the most popular option was guitar which received 63% of our votes followed by piano which received 25%. We expected these options to receive the highest amount of votes as they are both instruments that can produce slow paced and emotional music that can accompany the narrative of our music video. By the use of an instrument the artist can portray how they are feeling and help for the audience to understand their emotion which will make them more relatable for the audience and they can also start to build a relationship with the artist. We will take on board that these were the most popular instruments and try to interpret one of these instruments in our own music video production.
The final question that we asked in our questionnaire was "Where would you expect to see an indie music video to be set and why?". We asked this question in our music video questionnaire to find out where our target audience expected to find an indie music video set. The most popular answers that we received from our participants was
the town which received 40% of the votes closely followed by a house which received 35% and then the forest receiving 18% then bedroom receiving 8%. The results showed us that the setting of our music video doesn't need to be extreme fro it to be conventional to the indie genre as this means the main focus of the music video is on the artist and there is no distractions for the audience to be diverted from them. This is conventional as it goes back to showing that the artist is the most important aspect of the video and should therefore be focused on throughout the duration of the video. This will also help for the audience to be able to relate to the artist as they are constantly reminded of them. We will take the choice of setting from the results of our questionnaire on board to make sure our own music video production has professionalism and high quality elements to make it a conventional indie music video.
Vox Pops
Vox Pop 1
Vox Pop 2
Vox Pop 3
Vox Pop 4
Vox Pop 5
Alongside the questionnaire we will also produce vox pops for our questionnaire. This is a method of where we ask our participants our questionnaire in a video format. The purpose of the vox pops was so that our participants could expand on their responses and give us a wider insight to their opinions and views on the indie genre and how we could make our own indie music video more conventional and successful. They were beneficial as we could find out more information as our participants explain they answers in more detail and give us ideas to interpret into the production of our music video.
The theory that I will be considering for my questionnaire and vox pops is Hebdige's theory. His theory states that if you look deeper, there is enough richness to warrant renaming "subcultures" as "little cultures". I believe in Hebdige's theory as I believe that there are many different types of subcultures that some people may not even be aware of yet still exist. I believe that these subcultures could also be interesting to include in our own music video. I believe that it would be interesting as we would be specifying all different types of subcultures rather than generalizing them like the CCCS as this is not allowing people to be who they are and merge different types of cultures together. This is also not allowing or taking into consideration that teens and people may move from different sub culture and will therefore enjoy different aspects of different cultures. I want people to be able to give any interpretations that they may have in my questionnaire from all different types of cultures to get a mixed variety of answers and opinions to include in my own production of an indie music video.
This is a screenshot of the questionnaire that we gave to 40 people from our target audience.
Overall I found that creating a questionnaire and giving it to 40 people from our target audience category was extremely helpful in order for us to interpret ideas that was conventional to the indie genre. This is because the answers we gathered was the opinions of
the target audience that would be watching our music video, their answers was also the stereotypical elements of an indie music video which ensured us that the things we would be interpreting into our music video was ones to make it professional and conventional. We will incorporate our results into our music video by analysing the most accessible ideas and looking for ways to mix it in with our theme, narrative, song, lyrics and artist. If I was to carry out this research again I would ask for my target audience to give detailed examples of what exact elements they like in other indie music videos which would then give us the opportunity to look at these examples ourselves and take inspiration from them.
You have provided a sound analysis of your results, explaining what the results show, and how you will incorporate them within your video. However, you need to elaborate on reasons why certain people gave certain answers.
ReplyDeleteYou need to:
1) Try and give specific examples of what you will include within your music video because of your results
2) Include all of your vox pops - missing 1
3) Elaborate on your paragraph of subculture theory by explaining how you will incorporate it within your video
4) Give examples of reasons why people gave certain answers for your open questions
5) Check SPAG
