Planning Artist Image - Miss Miller

Planning Artist Image

Artist representation is essential within the music video as it tells the audience the personality of the artist and also the genre that the music video is from. For example if the music video was from the pop genre then the artists image would be represented as fierce, flashy and glamorous. The artist image is imperative in giving the audience something to relate too and make the artist more trustworthy and likeable to the audience.

This is a screenshot of my groups planning on artist image

The artist image is separated into many different aspects such as costume, hair and makeup. The first element we planned was our artists costume 1. The first costume will be used when the artist and her other female love interest will be outside in the bonfire scene. We have planned for the artist to wear a black leather jacket with black tights, a grey dress and black boots. Her makeup will be minimal to portray a natural look. The only makeup that she will wear will be winged eyeliner and a red lipstick and lip-gloss, her hair style will be loose and wavy. This hair and makeup will give our artist a free look which will represent her to the artist as natural and free spirited which they will be able to relate to as she is representing herself as someone who has their own style and doesn't care about being judged. The natural hair and makeup portrays her as being authentic and relatable as she looks as though she is just an ordinary girl who is going through a hard time much like the target audience would experience themselves. It also portrays a sense of realism as the target audience would expect the artist to be in an emotional state and mourning the relationship. We have decided to place her in this outfit as we believe that the outfit is very indie due to it being overall quite unique as many people wouldn't layer their clothes in this way and wear some of these items together. The outfit is also conventional to outdoors weather which gives our video a sense of realism which the audience can relate to. Having our artist wearing the black leather jacket it is representing her as fierce, bold and mysterious this is conventional to the indie genre as they usually wear dark colours as they portray messages of sadness and heartbreak in their material. The use of black tights and Dr Martin boots represents the grunge element of the indie genre portraying the artists as quite edgy and independent which is relatable to the target audience and fans of the indie genre as they would expect the artist to have their own sense of style and independence. The makeup that our artist will be wearing is also conventional to the indie genre. The use of red lipstick is common in indie artists as it shows them as sexy and seductive and also makes them stand out from the crowd which is conventional to indie artists. This is relatable to the target audience as it is giving them inspiration to be more like the artist and to not be scared of being independent and expressing themselves. This is conventional as the artists usually portray themselves in a way that would make the target audience idolise them and look up to them.

The second costume will consist of turtle neck top, ripped jeans, black high top converse, a khaki green parker jacket, and black chokers. This costume will be used in the market scene when the couple are filmed walking down the market hand in hand portraying the happy times in their relationship. The makeup worn by the artist will be similar to the makeup in costume 1. It will be minimal with the use of winged eyeliner and red lipstick. We will use this type of makeup on our artist throughout the video to show her as natural and down to earth as she doesn't care about her appearance to attract an audience which is something the target audience could relate to. The use of a turtle neck shows the audience that the indie artist by no means uses her body to attract and audience as this piece of clothing gives nothing away to the audience which is conventional to the indie genre as they usually only use their talent to express themselves and their music. The ripped jeans expresses an edgy feel and gives her a rough and mysterious look. This is conventional to the indie genre as most of the content in this genre is seen as mysterious and dark which makes the audience more intrigued to find out more about the artist. The khaki green parker jacket that we will use will connote the winter and give a sense of realism to our artist as the audience could relate to her using this type of jacket to keep warm in the winter. The colour green also represents a sense of nature which makes her seem more humble as an artists which the audience could relate too.  The shoes our artist will be wearing will be black high top converse which further give our artist an edgy yet mysterious feel which they can relate to as being indie genre fans as this is conventional clothing for this type of genre. It portrays our artist as quite endearing and this will make the audience anticipate what may happen in the music video. Our artist will also be wearing a black choker as part of the costume in this scene. We have decided to put our artist in a black choker as it will make her seem edgy and is also an element of grunge clothing which is common in indie artists and the indie genre making our artist that much more conventional. The choker could also represent the narrative and the relationship of the two characters in our music video. The choker could represent the control over the relationship as one of the girls doesn't want to express their true-selves as a lesbian which is causing heartbreak between the relationship.

The third costume that our artist will wear will consist of an oversized jumper, leggings, a ponytail or messy bun hairstyle and to be barefoot. This costume will be used in the house setting where the artist is seen hanging out with her friends and also singing in her bedroom towards the camera. The use of the oversized jumper and leggings is to show a sense of realism to the audience. This type of casual comfy wear is an outfit that would be worn by any person who is chilling out at home as it is comfortable, easy to wear and casual. This will portray the artist as someone who the audience can relate to as it shows them they are the same as them and that they don't live a high life because they are a celebrity. It shows the artist is down to earth and humble as she doesn't have to be glamorous all the time just because they are a celebrity. The makeup will be very minimal with only slight colouring and no red lipstick like the other two costumes. This is to also give a sense of realism as the audience wouldn't expect her to wear a lot of makeup and fancy clothes to sit at home. It shows the audience that like themselves the artist lives an ordinary life and still has friends and family which they can express themselves to like everyone else. This is also conventional to Star and Dyers theory which states the artist shows themselves as ordinary and extraordinary to gain trust and loyalty from their fans and target audience.

The final outfit that our artist will wear will consist of a cream dress with a denim jacket with black tights and boots. Her makeup will be quite heavy with heavy eye makeup with winged eyeliner, harsh contour and red lipstick. Her hair style will be loose and wavy to create a natural look to contrast with the heavy makeup as we still want our artist to come across as relatable and not too over the top. This outfit will be worn when the artist is performing and singing towards the camera. The cream dress that she will be wearing will represent purity and innocence which will help for the audience to feel sympathetic towards the artist as she sings about her emotions and how she is struggling to cope with her partner refusing to express her true self. The cream dress will also represent how the artist feels emotionless and drained due to the intense heartbreak she is struggling with. However, the dark make-up contrasts with the cream coloured dress and represents the other side of the situation, which shows her to be confident and being free and expressing her true self unlike how her partner wants to hide away from her true self in the situation. The audience will be able to relate to the artist because they will believe the artist is breaking down and confiding in them with her problems which makes her seem more open and humble. The denim jacket is an element of grunge clothing which is conventional to the indie genre. Most indie genres are seen wearing a denim jacket as it shows them as edgy and a style trend setter. The denim jacket will make the artist seem more mysterious and endearing for the audience which will make them intrigued to find out more about them. The black tights with Dr Martin black boots is also an element of grunge clothing. This type of clothing is dark and bold which makes the artist seem fierce yet paired with a cream dress makes her look conventional to the indie genre as she is creating her own style.   The heavy eye makeup is used to show our artist at her most glamorous stage in the music video. This makeup is going to be used in the performance element of the music video as this is the point where all the focus is on the artist. These points will be when the artist is single most strongly about her feelings and the biggest parts in the song so therefore we want our artist to stand out along with the song. We want her image to portray her as powerful as if she can overcome this situation independently and portray to the audience that everything is going to be alright. This will make the artist more relatable as the target audience who are going through similar situations with broken relationships can watch our artist and believe it isn't the end of the world and that they can also fix these problems and that everything will also be alright for them.

The target audience will be able to build a relationship with our artist as all her images make her relatable and give off a sense of realism. This is because we have tried to give our music video and our artist the most realistic look we can create in order for the audience to see themselves in these situations making the artist that much more relatable. The planning of our artists image has helped me as it has given me a better understanding of how simple elements such as clothing makeup and hairstyles can portray a certain message to the audience and make the artist seem more relatable for the audience. It has made me consider everything about the artist to produce them in a way that will be conventional to the indie genre but also successful to our target audience. The planning has made me realise how important our artist image is to consider and how to represent her in our music video to make it easy to follow for our target audience as we want to make it natural to understand for the audience. This will be helped by a successful artist image and make it more conventional to the indie genre.

  1. You have provided a sound analysis of your artist's representation through the costumes, hair and make-up you have chosen to use at each stage. You have explained how each look is conventional (or not) of the genre, and how the audience will be able to relate to the artist as a result. However, you need to consider connotations more.

    You need to:
    1) Think more about how the artist is represented through her clothing etc. in relation to the content of the video (Darker outfit when she is having troubled times with her partner?)
    2) Think more about the hidden meanings and messages behind each outfit, and link back to the content of the video.
    3) Check SPAG
