Applying for Music Copyright - Miss Georgiou

Applying for Music Copyright

The current act is the Copyright, Designs, and Patents Act 1988. It states that the law gives the creators of literary, dramatic, musical, artistic work, sound recordings, broadcasts, films and typographical arrangement of published editions, rights to control the ways in which their material may be used. The copyright law includes record labels, music publishers, merchandisers, the live events sector and the performers and artists within the music industry. With the use of copyright you have the right to do the following:
  • make copies of your work
  • distribute copies of your work
  • perform your work publicly
  • display your work publicly
  • make derivative works (including making modifications, adaptions, or other new uses of a work, or translating the work to another media)
Me and my group had to apply for copyright so we could legally produce and create our music video with the exclusive rights for its use. Firstly we had to find Birdy's record label online which is Warner Bros Records, Warner Music Group and 14th Floor Records and find out their contact details. We finally found an email address that was linked to Birdy's record labels website. We had to email the record label that Birdy belonged to and ask for permission to use the song in our A Level music video. We emailed the contact address stating that we was A level students who wanted to have rights to Birdy's song "Wings" to use in an educational video that would go on YouTube for our media class and OCR examinations officer to see.

Here is a screenshot of the email that we sent to Birdy's record label, which they are still yet to respond with their permission.

Once we had sent the email once we then got a response a few days later. However the response stated that the person we had emailed wasn't the correct person to get permission off however it would be fine if we was to call the following contact number and tell them about our situation. Here is a screenshot of the response we got.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of why music copyright is essential to carry out. You have identified the main points from the law, but you need to ensure that you have related the points back to detailed examples, to demonstrate further understanding.
